Intravenous, intraperitoneal, intrathoracic,
or intrucardiac administration of barbituates, particularly
pentobarbital sodium. Pentobarbital sodium is probably the
most humane and effective method of euthanizing pet animals.
The fact that this agent is also routinely used as an anes-
thetic eliminates the psychological barrier to euthanasia.
Dose: 66 mg/* (2 times the anesthetic dosr.) will
Produce death rapidly and easily. Three
times the dose will insure cardiac arrest in
most animals.
Pentobarbital solutions are available at relatively low cost:
Beuthanasia-D 1 ml/5 lbs. 250 ml. $12.00
Beuthanasia Special 1 ml/10 lbs 1.00 ml. 410.00
Pentobarbital sodium powder approx. $14.00/lb.
(Mix 1:3 with water)
4.5.2 Carbon Monoxide Chamber. Administered by bottled CO gas
entering a specially designed chamber at a regulated
speed (15 ltr/min) resulting in anoxic anoxemia death.
Dose: The concentration of gas in the chamber must
reach 6% with death usually occuring in less
than 10 minutes.
4.6 EUTHANASIA POLICY:
4.6.1 Sodium pentobarbital will be the primary agent used in
performing euthanasias at the shelter.
4.6.2 The second method the use of a carbon monoxide chamber,
using bottled gas, will be substituted at the shelter
manager's discretion but only when situations warrant an
alternative method for the protection and well being of
the animals and shelter personnel. Such animals may in-
clude the intractable, vicious or feral.
4.6.3 The chamber will not be used as a euthanasia agent for
animals under 6 weeks of age as they can not be effectively
euthanized with this method. `
4.6.4 The chamber will be built in accordance with the recom-
mendations of HSUS-report prepared by: The Department of
Animal Sheltering and Control Consultant Editor:
William R. Meade III.
