3 <br /> :t <br /> X <br /> i <br /> page 6 <br /> 4.0 EUTHANASIA <br /> 4.1 EUTHANASIA: The production of quiet, painless death in an <br /> animal for humane reasons. <br /> 4.2 RATIONALE: To effect the humane destruction of sick, injured, <br /> disabled, undesirable, and/or unadoptable pet animals with <br /> effective means by qualified shelter personnel as a necessary <br /> element integrated with other shelter functions. <br /> 4.3 IMPLEMENTATION: Animals judged upon admission to the shelter to <br /> be sick, disabled, or injured beyond reasonable veterinary care <br /> should be euthanized as soon as possible. Other animals, e.g. <br /> Intake 1.7, may be euthanized immediately at the discretion of the <br /> shelter manager. <br /> 4.4 METHOD: The choice of method should fulfill the following criteria: <br /> 4.4,1 Be humane or unassociated with pain, fright, or <br /> unnecessary discomfort. <br /> 4.4.2 Be safe for attending personnel. <br /> 4.4.3 Be easy to perform. <br /> 4.4,4 Be rapid in action. <br /> 4.4.5 Be economical to use. <br /> 4.4.6 Should not produce changes in the tissue which might <br /> camouflage findings at necropsy. <br /> 4.4.7 Be effective or irreversible. <br /> 4.4.8 within 15 minutes after euthanasia has taken place, a <br /> final examination must be made to verify the animal's <br /> death to prove no evidence of heatbeat or respiration. <br /> Animals should then be disposed of. <br /> 4.4.9 Euthanasia should be performed in a dignified professional <br /> manner without soiling the premises or handling the animals <br /> in a rough manner. <br /> 4.4.10 with owned animals it is imperative to have the owner sign <br /> a form authorizing euthanasia with or without permission to <br /> to dispose of the carcass. <br />
