Page 3 2.0 HOLDING PERIODS 2.1 There are three categories of incoming animals: 2.1.1 Bite suspects which are quarantined_ 2,1.2 Donated animals legally surrended by the owner to the appropriate animal control officer (ACO) or to the shelter. 2,1.3 Pound animals with or without tags-animals found by citizens or ACO's and surrendered to the shelter. 2.2 Holding Periods: 2.2.1 Animals suspected of rabies (bite suspects) way be held for 10 days (N.C. statutes 106-375, 106-376) them returned to the owner after certified healthy by a licensed graduate veterinarian, appropriate ACO, or euthanized in accordance with euthanasia policy if unclaimed. If unclaimed, the animal may be placed for adoption if in the shelter manager's judgement, the animal is not vicious and will not constitute a public menace. 2.2„2 Donated animals may be held for adoption or euthanized according to Intake Care item 1.6 and 1.7 at the shelter manager's discretion. 2.2.3 Holding Periods for adoptions are as follows: 2.2,3.1 3 Day Minimum-This condition would only apply under extreme crowding conditions. 2.2.3.2 5-10 Day Typical-The exact number of days an animal is held for adoption is at the shelter manager's discretion. Only in unique circumstances will animals be held longer than 10 days. 4 2.2.4 Holding Periods for found animals: Found animals are to be held at the shelter for a specific redemption period (provided they are in good health and uninjured) after which time they will become available for adoption (2.2.3) or euthanized in accordance with the shelter euthanasia policy at the shelter manager's discretion. Pound animals that are sick or injured will be held in accordance with humane society's emergencies policies (see attached emergency procedures)
