Page 3 <br /> 2.0 HOLDING PERIODS <br /> 2.1 There are three categories of incoming animals: <br /> 2.1.1 Bite suspects which are quarantined_ <br /> 2,1.2 Donated animals legally surrended by the owner <br /> to the appropriate animal control <br /> officer (ACO) or to the shelter. <br /> 2,1.3 Pound animals with or without tags-animals found <br /> by citizens or ACO's and surrendered <br /> to the shelter. <br /> 2.2 Holding Periods: <br /> 2.2.1 Animals suspected of rabies (bite suspects) way be <br /> held for 10 days (N.C. statutes 106-375, 106-376) <br /> them returned to the owner after certified healthy <br /> by a licensed graduate veterinarian, appropriate <br /> ACO, or euthanized in accordance with euthanasia <br /> policy if unclaimed. If unclaimed, the animal may <br /> be placed for adoption if in the shelter manager's <br /> judgement, the animal is not vicious and will not <br /> constitute a public menace. <br /> 2.2„2 Donated animals may be held for adoption or euthanized <br /> according to Intake Care item 1.6 and 1.7 at the <br /> shelter manager's discretion. <br /> 2.2.3 Holding Periods for adoptions are as follows: <br /> 2.2,3.1 3 Day Minimum-This condition would only <br /> apply under extreme crowding conditions. <br /> 2.2.3.2 5-10 Day Typical-The exact number of days <br /> an animal is held for adoption is at the <br /> shelter manager's discretion. Only in <br /> unique circumstances will animals be held <br /> longer than 10 days. 4 <br /> 2.2.4 Holding Periods for found animals: Found animals are <br /> to be held at the shelter for a specific redemption <br /> period (provided they are in good health and uninjured) <br /> after which time they will become available for adoption <br /> (2.2.3) or euthanized in accordance with the shelter <br /> euthanasia policy at the shelter manager's discretion. <br /> Pound animals that are sick or injured will be held in <br /> accordance with humane society's emergencies policies <br /> (see attached emergency procedures) <br />
