A
1.0 INTAKE & ANIMAL CARE: Page x
1.1 All incoming animals are to be logged in regardless of source
(Animal Control Officer, citizen, etc.). Log entry will note if
animal is in violation of city and/or county ordinance and so list.
*ACO's to include violation citation when animals are turned over
to the shelter. All animals logged should have noted where they
were packed up, i.e. Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Orange County.
1.2 Shelter personnel are to sign and date ACO log as proof of receipt
of animals turned over to the shelter by the city or county ACO.
1.3 All citizens who bring animals to the shelter regardless if they
are surrendering their own pet or a found animal, are to fill out
the surrender form and keep one copy as their receipt (see Form
1.1-78).' No surrender fee shall be charged under any circumstances,
however, donations including a spaying/neutering deposit can be
accepted.
1.4 All animals received at the shelter are to he given an ID Collar
with a number to correspond to the log entry, this number to also
be placed upon the cage or pen as applicable. Descriptions of the
animals are to be sent to the front desk for lost and found and
adoption processing as applicable.
1.5 All animals received are to be brought to the receiving room for a
visual check and administration processing (physical description,
ID tagging, medical check, ordinance violations).
1.6 Any animal that is injured or showing signs of disease or infection
will be separated from the remaining animals immediately and placed
in the isolation area or kept separated from the animals in the
shelter. As circumstances dictate, such animals may either be
euthanized in accordance with shelter euthanasia policy or brought
to a licensed graduate veterinarian for diagnosis. Upon the advice
and recommendation of a licensed graduate veterinarian, the decision
to treat or destroy will be at the shelter manager's discretion
(without liability to the society) based upon the following consid-
erations: cost of treatment; probability of being owned; extent of
injuries; likelihood of successful treatment; risk to other shelter
animals; availability of space in the shelter; time for recovery;
adoption potential of the animal.
1.7 Animals classified as non-adoptable or problem animals may be
euthanized immediately providing that there is no uncertainty con-
cerning ownership. such animals may include the very old, very
young (unweaned) , feral, vicious, handicapped, deformed, and high
concentration of similar looking young animals.
1.8 All animals received which do not fulfill the above two categories
(items 1.6 and 1.7) are to be checked over in the receiving area;
such exam to include the condition of gums, eyes, hair, general
body condition, alertness and temperment.
*ACO=Animal Control Officer
