6.0 EMERGENCY SERVICE page 9
6.1 Emergency services will of necessity be a joint venture between
the county and town animal control officers and APS volunteers.
6.2 poring Shelter working haur_s emergency situations coming to the
attention of the shelter manager, who would have the authority to
give veterinary approval, would be referred to a warden whenever
possible.l The warden, on picking up the sick or .injured animal,
would assess the seriousness of the situation. If the injury were
found minor, the animal would be transported to the shelter for
treatment there Otherwise, it would be taken to the veterinarian
whose schedule best permitted him/her to handle emergencies at that
hour of the day, or the hospital whose rabies tag it might be
wearing. After examining the animal, the veterinarian would in-
form the shelter manager of his diagnosis, and the manager would
decide the disposition of the case.
if the appropriate warden can not be reached, the shelter manager
will call on an APS volunteer to pick up the animal. and transport
it to the veterinarian/shelter
6.3 During_evening and weekend hours APS volunteers will respond to
emergency calls, much as they do now. A person calling the animal
shelter would hear a recorded vAssage giving the telephone numbers
of those coordinating the serviue.Z The coordinator would send a
trained volunteer to the scene, and if the animal were found to be
badly injured, it would be taken to the emergency hospital.3 After
the veterinarian had determined the extent of injuries, he would
call an APS veterinary approval person who would make the decision
about further treatment.
If the volunteer should find the animal suffering a superficial in-
jury which could be treated without a veterinarian's assistance, the
animal would ten be transported to the shelter.4
1The optimum situation would be to have radio contact between
the shelter and the ACOS' trucks. Such a system would seem to be a
worthwhile investment for the town, county, and APS,
?we would hope to have a Hillsborough number to be called by
those in northern Orange County.
3Expected to be completed by area veterinarians within a year.
4This presents the problem of how entrance to the locked shelter
can be managed. We would suggest that three of the shelter employees
be given keys and that on a rotating schedule one of the three be
available to open the shelter for animals brought in after hours.
