HARE JOIN t�E1f �11i Executive Director ORANGE CHATHAM .a J O• March 8, 1979 Mr. Richard W itted, Chairman Orange County Commissioners Orange County Courthouse Hillsborough, NC 27278 RE: Summer Remedial and Activity Program Dear Mr. Whit ed: Summertime, presents challenges to service agencies in meeting leisure time needs and developing programs for school age youth. Orange County and Orange County agencies have responded to this time period in dif ring ways. School systems' recreation departments, local community cen rs, libraries, civic clubs, churches and agencies such as JOCCA all play a part in this situation. Unfortunately there exists a significant lack of coordination and com- munication among these agencies which results in overlapping and gaps. A specific examp a of this in past years is JOCCA's Sumner lunch Program which attempte to Meet some of these concerns_ The Association of Community Agencies through a Nutrition Committee has been discussing this problem. JOCCA is requesting that the Orange County Commissioners sponsor Public Hearings which will accomplish the several necess ry purposes basic to clarifying public concerns and identi- fying areas fo service delivery. In order for some degree of success, I believe these earings should be attended by the Boards of Education and Recreation Dep s. structured in such a way as to assure opportunities for effective communication between these agencies, others who would be supportive to this idea and the public. We feel three hearings would assure county coverage. If you ani the Commissioners agree, in principle, we would urge that you request a eeting with the schools and recreation departments as soon as possible so th t the Public Hearings can be set up in advance of the final budgetting "cr nch" that is Larch or early April .
