Thompson <br /> -and- <br /> Mr. Randall Waugh <br /> Mrs. Jane Allen Waugh <br /> Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, <br /> In response to your request for our Board to "prepare and <br /> forward to appropriate Federal and State authorities, a <br /> resolution . . ." regarding the recent flag-burning incident on <br /> the UNC campus, our attorney advised us that the District Attorney <br /> was the appropriate officer to which this matter should be referred. <br /> T am enclosing copies of correspondence from the District Attorney on <br /> this matter, citing a 1974 decision of the United States Supreme Court, <br /> which indicates that the flag-burning incident is protected as "symbolic <br /> speech" by the First Amendment to the Constitution, <br /> Although we agree that this act is repugnant to us, we feel <br /> secure in reaffirming our support of the First Amendment, which <br /> allows such extreme expression of free speech.
