Supportive Services
Current supportive services of the family planning program include
activities in the areas of outreach, health education and an agreement
with the Dept. of Social Services for a Social Worker to certify clients
for Title XIXlXX.
Outreach efforts are supplied by two Family Planning Personal. Care
and Family Aides, one housed in Chapel Hill and one in Hillsborough.
Both PCFA's assist in clinical activities by setting up for clinics,
assisting the physician in the examining room, and following-up on
abnormal pap smears, and positive GC tests. Additionally, the PGFA's
home visit all new family planning patients to ensure they fully under-
stand how to properly- use their selected method of contraception, as
well as provide an opportunity for such patients to ask questions and
voice concerns regarding family planning.
A Social Worker supplied by the Department of Social Services
attends each family planning clinic to certify eligible patients for
Title XIX and XX. She has also been instrumental in gaining patients'
interest in the patient education classes and has been supportive of
the Family Planning Advisory Council.
Health Education services are currently supported by one full--time
health educator and two half-time health educators. The two half time
health educators were employed with program expansion monies depart-
mentally earmarked for a teen program. (See Teen Services following).
New services initiated during the first two quarters of FY 178-179
include providing patient education classes in conjunction with the
family planning•:clinics, the initial development of community based
teen health discussion groups, and laying the ground work for a Teen
Health Council (see Teen Services following).
Family planning health education activities have also been provided
within the public schools. Health education staff provided assistance
in the development and implementation of a Family Life Education cur-
riculum at the county high school. This curriculum was designed as a
pilot project and has been approved by the Change County Board of Edu-
cation. Additionally, technical assistance and support have been pro-
vided to teachers and guidance counselors in the middle, junior, and
senior high schools.
