12 6 <br /> t <br /> t <br /> P E T I T T Q N <br /> -to- <br /> THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ORANGE COUNTY, <br /> NORTH CAROLINA <br /> THAT, WHEREAS, it is our belief that nowhere in the world <br /> is human freedom so highly valued as in these United States; and <br /> WHEREAS, for over two hundred years this country has been a <br /> refuge for liberty and has provided fertile soil for the growth <br /> of human dignity; and <br /> WHEREAS, we justly take great pride in our national heritage; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, our flag is symbolic of our nation and its heritage; <br /> and, as such, is honoured and revered by those of us who have <br /> been blessed with being citizens of this great nation; and <br /> WHEREAS, it was reported in the Chapel. Hill Newspaper on <br /> January 26, 1979 that this symbol of our national heritage had <br /> been desecrated in Chapel Hill; and <br /> WHEREAS, we believe that the duly elected representatives <br /> of the people of Orange County, North Carolina should not allow <br /> such conduct to go unnoticed, rather they should express their <br /> heavy hearts and contempt for those who would despoil_ our flag; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, we do petition the Board of Commissioners <br /> of Orange County, North Carolina to request an investigation and <br />
