To change any of these names we must obtain
concurrence of the Department. Their system of naming roads leaves
much to be desired as:
1) Road names are duplicated.
2) The Department often assigned different names to segments
of the same road.
Very preliminary estimates indicate there are approximately 600
intersections at which signs should be placed. An exact count cannot
be taken from highway maps in our possession as they do not include
subdivision streets. Further, no policy has been formulated prescribing
the roads to be named. This estimate of 600 does not relate favorably
to the Alamance County experience of placing 425 signs south of Inter-
state 85.
SUGGESTED IMPLEMENTATION PROCEDURE
If the Board elects to proceed with this project, I suggest:
1) Allocate a CETA position funded sufficiently to attract
someone capable of:
a) Conducting necessary research attendant to proposing
road names.
b) Dealing with community groups and individuals having
concerns relating to road names.
2) Name a "task force" to hear complaints concerning road names,
to resolve these complaints where possible and to recommend to
the Board at a public'hearing names for each road.
BUDGET ESTI4TE
Based on placing signs at 600 intersections, a project budget might
look like this:
Project Coordinator (CETA) $ 00.
Clerical Support 2,000.
Supplies and Equipment 750.
Field Work Expenses 1,500.
Six Hundred Signs (600) 13,250.
Crew to Place Signs 6,000.
Total 23,500.
