Jan Pinney <br /> Board of Cpunty Commissioners <br /> P.O.Box 14 <br /> Carrbnro, 0 27514 <br /> Dear Mr.P ey: <br /> Pursuant to our conversation several weeks ago,I am writing to outline <br /> our aperat''on at the Student Health Action Committee %C) Clinics located <br /> in the Cha eel Hill-Carrbnro Multipurpose Center. The clinics are open <br /> every von night except certain holidays(e.g.Labor Day) and during <br /> exam periods. During the 7976-77 year they were open forty-nine <br /> evenings. he clinics are directed toward the indigent population of <br /> the commun' y and strive to provide quality Dental and Medical care to <br /> people who esperately need it, Community volunteers register patients <br /> between 60 and 8:90 p.m. and retrieve charts on those patients returning <br /> to the clinic. They prepare folders on new patients and re-file all materials <br /> after the clinic closes, Patients are seen on a first-comp,,Nfirst-served <br /> basis exoept for children and those in pain. <br /> SHP.0 Dental Clinic <br /> In the:Dental Clinic first year dental students perform teeth cleaning <br /> and diagnostic procedures as well as educate patients about proper tooth care <br /> and nutrition, Students enrolled in Dental Hygiene and Dental Assistant <br /> programs also participate in this aspect of the clinic's operation. <br /> Additional) , they take 'X-Rays" and administer fluoride treatments. After- <br /> wards, they are seen or are scheduled to be seen by second, third, and fourth <br /> year dental students who have had substantial clinical experience. They <br /> perform e inations, administer local anesthesia, and do restorative work <br /> (fillings: amalgams, temporaries, and composite resins) and minor surgery, <br /> All work is supervised by a preceptor from the INC School of Dentistry, <br /> fore complicated cases are referred to the Orange Chatham Comprehensive <br /> Health Services (OCCHS) or the clinics at the 11C Dental School. <br /> SB.4C Medical Clinic <br /> In the Medical Clinic first and second year medical students, along with <br /> n'arsing and ether health professions students, are responsible for inter- <br /> viewing and screening. Interviewing involves ascertaining the patient's <br /> chief complaint, tracing the history of the present 9.11ness, and eliciting <br /> a factual medical, family, and social history, Screening consists of <br /> recording height, weight,blood pressure,pulse, respirations, temperature, <br />
