Ztstahfish¢d bg ttn't4d oIi lllz 19be�1mt1f�acolntu�¢neral�Asswnhl� <br /> eox 922 <br /> HILLSOOROVGH,HOHTH CAROM <br /> April 16, 1978 <br /> M: Richard Whitted, Chairman <br /> Orange County Co issioners <br /> Orange County Mthouse <br /> Hillsborough,N.C. 27278 <br /> Dear mr,Whitted, <br /> The Historic Hillsborough Commission wishes to request that the Orange <br /> County Commissioners consider remission of County taxes on the Commission's 2-acre <br /> Burwell School property at the SW intersection of North Morton and West Union <br /> Streets fLots 152 and 1531 in the Town of Hillshorough. <br /> i <br /> The Commission purchased the 2-acre grounds together with an 8-room frame house and <br /> two small brick dependencies on July 1, 1965 for $35,000 because we wished to pre- <br /> serve, exhibit, and use a famous old school for girls, the Burwell School, that was <br /> essentially the beg onimg of women's higher education in North Carolina, We have <br /> completed a$120000 restoration job on the house and this math are beginning res- <br /> toration work on the brick dependencies. <br /> Both house and grounds are open to the public with trained attendants, The Coasis- <br /> sion is a non-pr 9fit organiaation, and we do not charge fees either for use of the <br /> grounds or for t9urs of the house.
