In North Carolina in the 19th century abortion was prohibited except <br /> to save the .life of the mother. <br /> Liberalization of North Carolina's law oocu=ed in 1967 and in 1971 to allow <br /> abortion when two physicians were in agreement on the need. <br /> In 1973, to comply with the Supreme Court decision of .that year which gave <br /> women the right t6 choose. an abortion, the General Assembly enacted the statue <br /> which is currently in effect. <br /> The North Carolina Medical, Care Commission said that during the first 10 to 12 <br /> weeks of conception, abortions may be performed by a licensed physician in ei-tbpr <br /> freestanding clinics or outpatient facilities. <br /> Because of a 1977 Supreme Court decision ana subsequent action by Congress in <br /> 1977 most low income woven•across the country are being denoted the option to <br /> choose an abortion as R solution to a problem pregnancy. Federal funding for <br /> this medical procedure is denied most women in the United States who are eligible <br /> for other government assisted medical care. Only seventeen states, including <br /> North Carolina and the D. C. have elected to cover the cost of abortions. <br /> .,. In North.
