y - AGENDA ATTACHMENT I
Page 2 ,
The Coalition for Choice began circulating petitions, mainly in the Charlotte/
Mecklenburg area, to get individual support for its position. over 500 people
signed the petitions, and on January 13 an ac. under the title "The Right to
Choose" appeared in The Charlotte Observer Listing individuals and organizational
supporters.
Can January 17, the State Social Service Commission met in Winston Salem and
approved a proposal by the Department of human Resources to use state funds
to cover the medical costs for women who choose to have an abortion. The money
was appropriated from February 1 through June 30, 1978. The guidelines for use
of this money are the same as the federal guidelines were prior to cut-off of
funds. The Social Service Commission made it quite clear that any money used
for this purpose after :Tune 30th would have to come from the State Legislature.
We are presently devising strategy to work with the State Legislature on this
issue and to .Lobby the federal government to abolish the "Hyde Amendment" in
the 1978 NEW-Labor Appropriations Bill.
The Coalition believes that worsen have the right to choose a medically safe
abortion. We will continue to work to make sure that this right is protected.
If you want to support, this right, please join us.
JO Blum
Planned Parenthood of Greater Charlotte
951 S. indepenapnce Boulevard
Charlotte, NC: 28202
377-0841 r
January, 1978
