Dent, M.D.
Professor of Anesthesiology
Duke University Medical Center
Dear Sara:
It was nice to meet with you to discuss the possibilities of
Duke Hospital becoming a sponsoring hospital for the orange County
Rescue Service. As we discussed, the important points of this
affiliation would include; your assuming medical responsibility for
t're rescue squad to assure adequate training in achieving EMT-IV
status in addition to providing four hours of re-training each
month. Second, the rescue squad should acquire liability coverage
and maintain it during the period that the sponsorship is provided
by Duke Hospital . The squad should use the IV protocol presently
in existance in Durham County and communicate with the Duke Hospital
Emergency Department to obtain permission. to start IV' s under this
protocol. Fourthly, since our present regimen requires that each
EMT have V starts each obtain
startedin
addition IV
the field.
We both agree that maintenance of .adequate records to document
the IV starts, the indications and' authorizati.on as well as a monthly
review process would be an intrinsic part of a, sound program. I
think this is an excellent opportunity to provide cooperation between
the Duke Hospital and your rescue squad which does apleasetforward o
If you think we can develop this type of a program, p
a Letter to Dr. Roscoe Robinson and we can proceed with a formal
sponsorship.
Sincerely,
Joseph A.
