Pre- <br /> liminary inLoations show that approximately 975 individuals re- <br /> ceived some service from the basic training program by September <br /> 30. One-ha f of the 975 will still be in training on September <br /> 30,1977. They are scheduled to complete their training after <br /> October 1, 1 77. Those 783 individuals , who were served, received <br /> training th ough a variety of activities which include classroom <br /> vocational raining at Durham Technical Institute, on-the-job skill <br /> training wih private and public employers , part-time after school <br /> jobs for hi h school youth, high school equivalency training for <br /> school drop�uts, job experience for new entrants into the labor <br /> force and unskilled persons, vocational exploration for economi- <br /> cally disad antaged high school youth, and training of the unem- <br /> ployed and economically disadvantaged on how to find a job and <br /> retain a jo . In the Classrooms, Vocational training activity, the <br /> program served 284 persons in curriculums such as practical nurse <br /> education, respiratory therapy, auto mechanics , keypunching, and <br /> secretarial, skills . Another 155 persons received actual on-the- <br /> job training i with public and private employers (78 persons with <br /> public employers and 77 with private employers) . Part-time jobs <br /> for 132 high school youths provided job experience and the oppor•- <br /> tonity to leaxn good work habits . The training program provided <br /> 103 persons, who had less than a high school education, with the <br /> opportunity to complete the high school equivalency and improve <br /> their chances of finding work. Job Preparation classes for 40 <br /> persons focused on learning job-seeking skills and job-zetaini.ng <br /> skills. Job experience and vocational exploration training went <br /> to 80 persons who lacked skills and lacked actual. experience in a <br /> job. To offer these training opportunities , the program expended <br /> $875 , 826 from October 1 , 1976 to June 30,1977. <br /> Title III funds for the 1977 Summer Youth Employment program <br /> provided jobs to 794 economically disadvantaged youths. Expendi- <br /> tures in this program amounted to $526,024 . Additionally, the <br /> Title I trai ing program provided summer jobs to another 130 young- <br /> sters. In a 1, the summer youth employment program expanded $609, 896 <br /> on 924 young tern between the ages of 14 and 21. <br /> Another 248 unemployed persons were served in the public service <br /> jobs program between October 1, 1976 to June 30, 1977. Expenditures <br /> on behalf of these persons totaled $993, 580. <br /> These 2 8 persons were employed through 150 Public Service <br /> Employment positions . For Fiscal. year 1978, the Durham-orange <br /> program will fund 267 positions. Sixty-seven positions are for <br /> Orange Count residents , one hundred-seventy positions are for <br /> City of Durh m residents , and thirty positions are for the resi- <br /> dents of the Balance of Durham County. Under the President' s <br /> Economic Stimulus Program, the Public Service Jobs Program of 267 <br /> positions ha a funding level of more than $2. 6 million.
