C;011f-� <br /> /Z °3 <br /> Durham-oran e Employment and Training Program <br /> Summary of xojected Activities <br /> October 1., 177 to September 30,1978 <br /> The Durham--Orange Employment and Training Program plans to <br /> serve 1, 014 persons in Title I Activities during the fiscal year <br /> that began October 1 . The cost will be $1,299, 698. This incltdes <br /> $1 , 228,168 in a new allocation from Title I of the Comprehensive <br /> Employment and Training Act and $71, 530 in funds being carried <br /> over from the fiscal year just ended. <br /> As has been our custom in the past, approximately 30 per cent <br /> of the fund will be spent on participants who will come from Orange <br /> County and 0 per cent of the money will go to participants who re- <br /> side in Dur am County. <br /> The .se vices we provide are all aimed at one positive result-- <br /> to make the individual with whom we work more employable. our aim <br /> is to assist as many persons as possible to gain skills , work ex- <br /> perience, w rk attitudes and habits that will make it possible for <br /> them to move successfully and permanently into jobs that provide <br /> economic self-sufficiency. <br /> Now how do we accomplish these goals? <br /> We start in the high schools with economically disadvantaged <br /> youngsters age 14 and over who are in danger of dropping out be- <br /> cause of the economic pressure on their families . These youngsters <br /> attend regular public school classes and work for various public or <br /> non-profit agencies for an average of 12 hours a week. They are <br /> paid the minimum wage, now $2. 30 an hour, and receive fringe benefits <br /> of social security and workmen ' s compensation. The Program will <br /> operate 32 w eks this year. Today (October 3) is the first day of <br /> the first of those 32 weeks. An average youngster will earn $27. 60 <br /> per week. The total cost for 140 youngsters is $1:32 ,034 . <br /> Vocational Classroom training in regular curriculum courses at <br /> Durham Techn " cal, Institute will be provided to 313 persons for a <br /> total. 404 quarters during the year. Training areas range from <br /> licensed Practical nursing, respiratory therapy, and pharmacist <br /> assistant, t? automotive mechanics , machinist, stenography, police <br /> science, keyp� unchi_ng and accounting. We pay tuition and book costs <br /> and participants receive the minimum wage for hours of class attend- <br /> ance. The c t st of serving these 313 persons will be $313,202 . <br /> We plan to serve 140 persons in Human Resource Development <br /> Classes where there is both motivational and job-seeking training <br /> and instruction toward obtaining a high school diploma . The cost <br /> will be $102 , 573. <br /> We plan to serve 376 persons in Job Preparation Courses where <br /> there is special emphasis on job-seeking and retaining skills and <br /> personal motivation. Many of these persons will be in the first <br />
