Background: Began playing guitar and piano at an early age, always with a desire to"make up
songs". Discovered the mandolin at age thirteen, and, drawn to the bluegrass
styles, began to learn to play it and the banjo from Bucky Hanks, and other
Asheville,NC area pickers. Pettee learned composition from renowned western
NC songwriters, including Larry Rhodes, Don Humphries, and Malcom
Holcombe. Upon graduation from college,Pettee chose to pursue a career in
bluegrass music. In 1981, Pettee co-founded The Shady Grove Band which
became a full-time touring group in 1984, and has recorded over forty of
Pettee's compositions. Pettee received regular instruction on mandolin from
mandolin-master Tony Williamson in the 1980s. In late 80s,Pettee began to
offer in-school programs about the history of traditional music, while continuing
to tour with Shady Grove Band and write music.
