George Moses Horton was the first published African-American poet in the southeast and he
accomplished this while still being enslaved right down the road in Chatham County, NC. He used his
love of words to teach himself to read as a boy and later used words to encourage and enlighten others
during a time when African-American literacy was discouraged. This school-wide project serving
approximately 523 students and 50 staff at Northside Elementary will engage students in a common
story and create poetry to share with others both within and outside the school community. Funds for
the project will support the author's appearance fee, and provide copies of his books (purchased at a
substantial discount) for use by students and teachers for years to come.
Author/Illustrator Don Tate will visit Northside Elementary to share his expertise as both an author and
illustrator while allowing students to build on work they will do around his book, Poet:The Remarkable
Story of George Moses Horton. After the author visit, students will carry out the learning through
International Dot Day in September during which students will use the power of their words to create
poetic images that express themselves.Their work will be displayed throughout the building and
students will use SKYPE to digitally connect with other students across the country who will also be
celebrating"Dot Day"to share Northside's creative poetic masterpieces.
Expected Outcomes: The goal is for all Northside students to create a piece of meaningful poetry
following the author visit. This will not only build community in the first month of school, but also serve
as the first powerful writing experience of the school year. All students will witness the power their
words and put their creative works on display for our community. As a project assessment, students will
express what they learned from the experience through a personal survey.
