We have a list of sites and
structures, and will be ready to start taking photographs in July, and will continue through
October.Thomas Watson and Jackie Bradsher Liggins are life-long members of the Orange
County community and will take the lead in identifying places to photograph and people to
interview. Based on past experience,we expect that our list of places and people will grow as
this proposed project progresses, while we are out in the field. In autumn,we will consult with
Peter Sandbeck,Cultural Resources Specialist for Orange County, and other local historians to
document our findings.
Once we finalize the pieces for the exhibition and the narratives,we will prepare for the artists'
opening and storytelling event in February 2016, on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. If we are
successful in receiving a grant from the Hillsborough Tourism Board, this program will follow a
January program on minority-owned businesses of Hillsborough, and we may be able to have a
combined exhibition. In March, FSF will recap, analyze and assess our yearlong activities,
compile a photo album for the website, and prepare the final grant report. Our goal is to install
our exhibit in February in commemoration of Black History Month.
Because Free Spirit Freedom is an HAC project,we will publicize our events through the HAC
website, Facebook page and listserv, and the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough website and its
listserv. Laurie Paolicelli of the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau will post on the
Bureau's website, Facebook page and listserv. We will post the event as prescribed by OCAC,
prepare a release for WCHL Radio, and place an announcement in the News of Orange County,
the News and Observer and the Orange County website. Local community organizations,
chambers of commerce and faith assemblies will receive "save the date" cards and invitations.
• information concerning whether you have undertaken similar activities in the past.
Free Spirit Freedom has undertaken similar activities in the past, and with overwhelming
success. In January and February 2015,we had two exhibitions and accompanying storytelling
events—one on the Black Church and the other on Schools for Colored Children. We were
pleased to have audiences that were diverse with respect to age, ethnicity, interest and
residency.Attendees and visitors stated that we should organize and host more events of this
nature. We otherwise have had exhibits and displays using old photographs at various
community events, and our mission and content have been well-received.
• number audience per program; geography of audience; mix of ethnicity, age, and gender.
Our intended audience is a multi-generational and culturally-diverse group,a cross-section of
the Orange County community, inclusive of people from the urban centers, rural townships and
surrounds. Our participants are respected local residents who have"their own following" and
will attract others. Based on attendance at our previous events,we hope to have 200+visitors
and audience participants for the Sunday afternoon exhibition and storytelling event. We plan
to use the Richard E.Whitted Building in Hillsborough. The exhibitions will remain for the
duration of the two months,so that many more visitors will have opportunities to view them.
• Discuss how the arts program will be integrated into the curriculum.
n/a
