Other African American
entrepreneurs,non-farmers, owned and operated businesses that served people and other
enterprises throughout the region. Despite the laws of segregation, individuals advanced and
businesses thrived,and remnants and vestiges of those days still exist...and we want to
document that era through images and narratives.
More specifically,we propose to use the grant funds to:
• 1] contract with Jacquelin Liggins,local photographer,to photograph historic farm and
business structures and sites owned and operated by people of color,thriving in Orange
County at least 50 years ago,and that still may be in operation; contract with Joanie
Alexander to enhance the images [$450];
• 2] contract with Renee Price to design and compose the publicity or promotional
materials as well as the brochures or program materials [$150];
• 3] assist with marketing costs—producing posters,flyers [$50];
• 4] print and mount forty-five [45] new photographs/images and reprint and mount
twenty-five [25] historic photographs on sintra,at A Better Image Printing, [$450];
• 5] purchase canvases and other materials to install a photography exhibition with the
new images and reprinted photographs [$200];
• 6] provide stipends/honoraria to 4 featured Orange County community elders at the
Storytelling,who will recount their experiences,memories and viewpoints [$200].
Activities that will be part of the overall project and supported with applicant cash,including in-
kind contributions,are:
• facility rental;
• some marketing and publicity;
• a catered reception for the exhibition-storytelling event.
