I began this project in 1998 using a 35 mm Nikon camera, and have
captured revealing shots of several rural schools for African-American children including:
Haith School, Sartin School,Corbett School, Union Grove School. I have always had a
fascination with school architecture.
We still have several buildings in the community that portray this era of our one and two room
schools in the early years,if the school lacked a well, students carried water from neighboring
houses. Schools were heated with potbelly stoves;the boys in the school chopped wood for the
next day. Classroom books were used and handed down from the white schools in the area.
I would like to continue taking photographs in the existing buildings or what remains of them.
The photographs will capture architectural features or details, as well as buildings in their
entirety.
You will also notice the photograph below is a book that I had published of people over 90 that
are still self-sufficient. They all have high morals and definitely believe in treating people with
respect.
My abstract paintings are expressions of freedom and movement. With acrylic paint, on
masonite, wood or industrial material. I create compositions of vivid journeys to other
dimensions. While my hands work freely and naturally,my mind focuses on design, color and
texture. As I create, the abstract becomes limitless and creativity seems endless.
Owned and managed Bradiggins Art Gallery in downtown Historical Hillsborough. Exhibited
local artists and artist from across the country. 1996-2001
Swain Design Center- showcase paintings twice a year for the High Point Furniture Market
Exhibited at local galleries between Chapel Hill and Durham NC.
Member of several committees:
Horace Williams House, art committee member in Chapel Hill,NC
Former committee member of the Thomas Day Museum foundation in Milton NC
Compass Center for Women committee member in Chapel Hill, NC
Member of the Durham Art Guild in Durham, NC
Co-op member Skylight Gallery in Hillsborough,NC
Swain Design Center- showcase paintings twice a year for the High Point Furniture Market
