Each day, she will go to each of the four third grade classrooms for one. On the <br /> final day, February 23, parents/families will be invited to the classroom to observe some <br /> of the activities students participated in throughout the week and share their work. Prior <br /> to the start of the residency, Queen will meet with the four third grade teachers to plan <br /> specifics of the residency and gather feedback from teachers regarding additional <br /> extensions. Following the performance, students and teachers will complete evaluations <br /> to measure their experiences during the residency, and Queen will meet with teachers <br /> to discuss the residency as a whole and evaluate what worked well and what could <br /> make the experience even better. <br /> Specifically, the residency will cover the following curriculum areas in Social Studies <br /> and Theatre Arts: <br /> Social Studies <br /> 3.C.1 Use movement, voice and writing to communicate ideas and <br /> feelings <br /> 3.C.2 Use performance to communicate ideas and feelings <br /> 3.CU.1 Analyze theatre in terms of the social, historical, and cultural <br /> contexts in which it was created <br /> Theatre Arts <br /> 3.H.1 Understand how events, individuals and ideas have influenced <br /> the history of local and regional communities <br /> 3.H.2 Use historical thinking skills to understand the context of events, <br /> people and places <br /> 3.0 & G.2 Understand how citizens participate in their communities <br /> Approximately 492 kindergarten through fifth grade students (ages 5-11) will participate <br /> in the performance on February 24. Of those, 261 are male and 231 female. The <br /> race/ethnicity breakdown is as follows: Hawaiian Pacific Islander—2, African-American <br /> — 52, White — 320, Asian —4, Hispanic— 98, and Multiracial — 16. There are <br /> approximately 86 third grade students who will participate in the residency. <br /> Grady A. Brown Elementary has participated in residencies/performances of this nature <br /> in the past. Most recently, Teaching Artist Charles Pettee, a bluegrass musician, worked <br /> with kindergarten through fifth grade students in April 2014 to explore North Carolina <br /> culture through music and dance. During the week, he led sessions with individual <br /> classes and then had a culminating performance at the end of the week for all students. <br /> And in April 2012, second graders at Grady A. Brown Elementary participated in a <br /> residency with cross-cultural percussionist Beverly Botsford, and then at the end of the <br /> week the whole school had an opportunity to work with her in a culminating <br /> performance. <br />
