Brown Elementary is located about three miles southwest of historic <br /> Hillsborough. The facility, built in 1975, serves area kindergarten through fifth graders <br /> from the Orange County Schools District. The school was named for Mr. Grady <br /> Anderson Brown, who was a well respected teacher, coach, and principal at the old <br /> Hillsborough High School. <br /> The mission of Grady A. Brown Elementary School is to educate all students to their <br /> highest level of academic performance, while fostering positive development of their <br /> physical, mental, and social well being, so that all students can be contributing citizens <br /> to our democratic society. <br /> Currently, Grady A. Brown Elementary has 35 teachers and 492 students, 46% which <br /> receive free/reduced lunch. <br /> SCHOOL ARTS PROGRAMS <br /> Grady A. Brown Elementary offers the following art programs to every child in the <br /> school: <br /> ➢ Music <br /> ➢ Art <br /> PROPOSED USE OF GRANT FUNDS <br /> On February 24, 2016, Bright Star Theatre will present "The Struggle for Freedom: The <br /> Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."to all kindergarten through fifth grade students at <br /> Grady A. Brown Elementary. The show celebrates the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther <br /> King, Jr. through the context of the American Civil Rights Movement. The production will <br /> include songs from that time period and will allow students to experience the heroic <br /> work of Rosa Parks, the March on Washington and many other key moments in history. <br /> Prior to the show, all third grade students at Grady A. Brown Elementary will participate <br /> in a five-day curriculum-integrated drama and creative movement residency with <br /> Teaching Artist Virginia Queen. The residency will prepare students to see the show by <br /> exploring historic moments in the Civil Rights Movement, while simultaneously engaging <br /> in theatre and creative movement activities that will enhance their creative expression, <br /> performance skills, self-esteem and cooperation with others. Queen will explore the <br /> themes of equality, courage, hope and determination with the students and tie this into <br /> the third grade social studies curriculum. The drama exercises and improvisations will <br /> also focus on imagination, play production etiquette and fundamentals, and <br /> performance techniques. <br />
