Detailed programs and exact dates are still
to be determined.
• October 25,2015:. A children's concert with guest conductor Evan Feldman featuring
music associated with Halloween.
• December 2015: A classical concert with guest conductor Evan Feldman.
• February 2016: Auditions for 2016 Young Artists Competition. Winner performs in
concert with the orchestra in May 2016. Runners-up read their repertoire with the
orchestra in rehearsal.
• February 2016: A classical concert with conductor Donald Oehler.
• May 2016: A classical concert with conductor Donald Oehler featuring Hindemith's
"Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes By Carl Maria von Weber"and the winner
of the 2016 Young Artists Competition.
Proposed Uses of Grant Funds
Under the leadership of guest conductor Andrew McAfee, the orchestra initiated a
children's concert in 2007 and has made it an annual event since 2009. With attendance of
around 300 (evenly split between elementary-school-aged children and adults),this concert in
particular reaches beyond traditional classical music audiences. Held in the informal setting
of Kenan Rehearsal Hall, the children's programs are designed to entertain, educate, and
inspire, especially encouraging active listening and engagement with the music.
Scheduled for October 25,2015,this year's concert will be similar to prior CHP
children's programs. Because the concert is free, the audience tends to be more diverse in
income level than most classical music audiences. A typical children's program includes a
combination of some of the following elements:
• A musical introduction to individual instruments or orchestral sections
• Selections of recognizable repertoire or music with broad appeal
• Visual components (for example animations or photo sequences) demonstrating
music's capacity to enrich visual images
• Music used in combination with narration to show how music tells a story
• Opportunities for audience participation with the music through sing-a-longs,
clapping,kazoos, etc.
• Chances for children to try their hands at conducting the orchestra
• Musical appearances by young performers
• An instrumental"petting zoo"after the concert, allowing children to see, hear, and try
instruments up close
The attached sample CD includes short examples from past CHP children's programs. Also
attached are a sample program, sample mini-flyer,and photos from past children's programs.
Grant funds have been requested to help pay the salary of the music director, rental
costs for the use of UNC Music Department facilities, a stipend for a guest harpist, and music
rental costs. Remaining expenses for the concert(not covered by the grant request)include
program printing costs, salaries of technical staff, and costs of our archival recording.
