ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: June 3, 2008 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. 4-im <br />SUBJECT: Agreement for Seymour Center Public Art Project <br />DEPARTMENT: Orange County Arts PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />Commission <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Draft Agreement for Seymour Center <br />Public Art Project <br />List of Committee Members <br />Artist Statement of Interest/Resume <br />Artist Rendering of Site Specific Design <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Martha Shannon, 245-2335 <br />I <br />PURPOSE: To authorize the County Manager to sign the Seymour Center Public Art <br />agreement with artist Wayne Trapp contingent upon final review by staff and the County <br />Attorney. <br />BACKGROUND: Based on a 2007 request from the Orange County Department on Aging, the <br />Orange County Arts Commission sponsored a public art project at the new Robert and Pearl <br />Seymour Center at 2551 Homestead Road (Southern Human Services Campus) in Chapel Hill. <br />The Arts Commission solicited volunteers from the Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) <br />board and County staff located at the site to serve on an artist selection committee. Four <br />OCAC board members and four Friends of the Seymour Center board members volunteered to <br />serve on this Seymour Center Public Art Selection Committee. Assistant County Manager <br />Gwen Harvey also served on the Committee representing the County Manager's office. (Note: <br />The Manager previously shared information on this Committee effort . with the Board in a <br />February 1, 2008 Manager's Memorandum.) <br />The Seymour Center Public Art Selection Committee met on November 26, 2007, January 9, <br />February 6, April 7, and May 15, 2008. A Call for Qualifications was issued to North Carolina <br />artists, with Orange County artists encouraged to apply. A total of seven submissions were <br />received, six being provided by the published deadline. Three finalists were selected by the <br />Committee. Public comments on the site specific designs of the finalists were then solicited, <br />and the Seymour Center Public Art Selection Committee selected the site specific design <br />submitted by sculptor Wayne Trapp of Vilas, NC. <br />As a celebrated sculptor, Mr. Trapp has worked in stone and steel for over 40 years creating <br />lavish, even colossal outdoor pieces for corporate clients and smaller more particular pieces for <br />private clientele. Mr. Trapp's sculptures have been commissioned worldwide by corporations <br />
