Fairview Park Opportunities and Constraints
The southern portion of the tract includes a forested area (-8 acres) with 40- to 50-year-
old hardwood trees. The understory is fairly open and absent of invasive exotic plant
species. The USGS quad map identifies a small wetland within this wooded area.
There may once have been a wetland (or pond), but today there is no open water or
wetland vegetation. A small stream flows north from this area (parallel with Rainey
Ave.) toward the playground. This low-lying area may be suitable for walking trails,
but probably not suitable for active recreation fields.
Finally, a buried telephone cable runs along an easement located just inside and
parallel to the southern property boundary.
m yYpepe .y.
•7
i!Y• +Y
Forested bottomland in southwest corner of property Southern portion of former landfill(facing north);
road dividing County/Town tracts at upper right.
Topoarabhv and Soils
The County Tract is comprised of mostly Georgeuille and Herndon B/C soils much of
which was covered over by fill material when this site was a landfill. When the landfill
was closed (1982-83) it was covered with clay fill dirt of variable depths. The former
landfill includes some open pockets (subsurface) where the land was not fully
compacted. Those pockets cause the land to be unstable and hold water. A small
stream bisects the former landfill area and carries runoff eastward and through the
adjacent Town tract.
The landfill did not extend to the northwestern, wooded portion of the tract where
Herndon B/C soils drain to two small streams. These soils have medium to high
potential for recreation uses. The southern portion of the tract is comprised of Lignum
and Enon soils, which have fairly good potential for recreational use. Some of that
area, however, appears to be bottomland and may be wet during part of the year. A
small stream runs along the western boundary and may spill into this adjacent low
area. That stream flows from the southwest part of the tract, past the playground area,
then joins another stream and turns east and across the property.
