Orange County: Buckhorn Village
The number of retail establishments in Orange County is estimated to be 955 in 2007.
Based on the 2007 population estimate, there are about 130.5 people in Orange County for every
retail establishment. Alamance, Wake, and Cabarrus Counties have lower numbers of persons
per retail establishment than Orange County. Based on this information the Orange County
market place is not saturated with retail establishments given the higher people to establishment
figures of comparable communities.
2007 Retail Establishments
County Number of Retail
Establishments People per
Establishment
Oran e 955 130.5
Alamance 1,176 122.9
Chatham 353 169.3
Durham 1,927 132.2
Wake 6,605 122.9
Cabarrus 1,257 127
Johnston 1,138 137
Source: ESRI
In raw numbers, Orange County's retail sales rank near the bottom of the group. Only
Chatham County's sales are lower and Chatham County's population is significantly less than
Orange County's. This information, along with low people to establishments ratio, makes a case
that Orange County's retail market is underserved and dollars are flowing out of the community.
2006-2007 Taxable Retail Sales and Sales Tax Collections
Counties Taxable Retail
Sales Sales Tax
Collections
Orange $948,302,963 $41,765,632
Alamance $1,371,732,692 $59,966,191
Chatham $301,018,001 $13,214,818
Durham $3,796,970,577 $166,292,584
Wake $11,262,239,398 $494,403,505
Cabarrus $1,882,429,350 $82,429,237
Johnston $1,135,891,639 $49,629,694
Source: NC Department of Revenue, Sales and Use Tax Statistics
Sanford Holshouser 12
