Resolution Requesting Abandonment of Ben <br />Wilson Road — SR 1140 (Partial) <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Abigaile Pittman, 245 -2567 <br />Tom Altieri, 245 -2575 <br />Craig Benedict, 245 -2585 <br />PURPOSE: To make a recommendation to the North Carolina Department of <br />Transportation ( NCDOT) and the North Carolina Board of Transportation (NC BOT) on a <br />petition to add Ben Wilson Road Extension — SR 1140 (partial); and approve a resolution <br />requesting the abandonment of Ben Wilson Road — SR 1140 (partial). <br />BACKGROUND: Under NCDOT Project 44160, Wilson service road was constructed in <br />2014 to provide access to the Morinaga Candy Factory facility, and Ben Wilson Road was <br />reconfigured to create a t- intersection with the service road. Wilson service road was <br />approved by the BOCC at its January 22, 2015 meeting, and the NCDOT is now petitioning <br />to add the extension of Ben Wilson Road — SR 1140 to the State Maintained Secondary <br />Road System, and to abandon the original curved portion of Ben Wilson Road — SR 1140. <br />The roads constructed as part of the NCDOT project will ultimately be a component of the <br />larger access network serving economic development efforts in this area. <br />Ben Wilson Road is located south of Wilson Road and Interstate 40/85 east of the <br />Alamance County line (Attachment 1). The right -of -way for the extended portion of Ben <br />Wilson Road to be added to the State System was dedicated by Plat 112 Page 174 in May, <br />2014 (Attachment 2). The road has been built to a public road standard. The driveway <br />permits for the reconfiguration of the intersection of Ben Wilson Road and Wilson Road, <br />and for access to the Morinaga facility from Wilson Road, were handled by NCDOT and the <br />City of Mebane. <br />
