8 <br />1 <br />FAIR HOUSING MONTH <br />2 <br />th <br />3 <br />WHEREAS,April 2015 marks the 47anniversary of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and the <br />nd <br />4 <br />32anniversary of the North Carolina Fair Housing Act prohibiting discrimination in housing on <br />5 <br />the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, handicap and familial status; and <br />6 <br />7 <br />WHEREAS,the Orange County Board of Commissioners enacted the Orange County Civil <br />8 <br />Rights Ordinance on June 6, 1994, which affords to the residents of Orange County the <br />9 <br />protections guaranteed by Title VIII and additionally encompasses the protected classes of <br />10 <br />veteran status and age; and <br />11 <br />12 <br />WHEREAS,Orange County and the United States Department of Housing and Urban <br />13 <br />Development as well as concerned residents and the housing industry are working to make fair <br />14 <br />housing opportunities possible for everyone by encouraging others to abide by the letter and <br />15 <br />the spirit of fair housing laws; and <br />16 <br />17 <br />WHEREAS,despite of the protection afforded by the Orange County Civil Rights Ordinance <br />18 <br />and Title VIII as amended, illegal housing discrimination still occurs in our nation and in our <br />19 <br />County; and <br />20 <br />21 <br />WHEREAS,by supporting and promoting fair housing and equal opportunity, we are <br />22 <br />contributing to the health of our County, State and Nation. <br />23 <br />24 <br />NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Board of County Commissioners of Orange County North <br />25 <br />Carolina, do proclaim April 2015 as FAIR HOUSING MONTH and commend this observance to <br />26 <br />all Orange County residents. <br />27 <br />th <br />28 <br />This,the 7day of April 2015. <br />29 <br />30 <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Price,seconded by Commissioner Pelissier for <br />31 <br />the Board toapprove the proclamationand authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br />32 <br />33 <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />34 <br />35 <br />Commissioner Price said she is very pleased to see the progress made by the Human <br />36 <br />Relations Commission over the years. <br />37 <br />38 <br />c.Public Safety Telecommunicators Week <br />39 <br />The Board consideredapproving a proclamation recognizing the week of April 12 through <br />40 <br />18, 2015 as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in Orange County and authorizingthe <br />41 <br />Chair to sign. <br />42 <br />43 <br />Dinah Jeffries read the proclamation: <br />44 <br />45 <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />46 <br />47 <br />PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATORS WEEK <br />48 <br />49 <br />April 12-18, 2015 <br />50 <br /> <br />
