He said the Chapel Hill Courts Facility may relocate to the Southern Campus but there is <br />28 <br />no time frame for this move. He said the new Justice Facility in Hillsborough is adequate, well <br />29 <br />used and well operated space. <br />30 <br />SheriffBlackwood said the justice facilities in Chapel Hillcan be absorbed into <br />31 <br />Hillsborough,but it would not be convenient for residents, operational staff, attorneys, and <br />32 <br />police officers.He said the thought of moving ittoo far north is onethat he would hope to steer <br />33 <br />away from. <br />34 <br />Sheriff Blackwood said the Old Courthouse within the new justice facility, the Mural <br />35 <br />Courtroom, was built as a sixty-year courthouse. He said it has served, and continues to serve, <br />36 <br />its purpose very well. He saidthey do have room for expansion atthe new facilityin <br />37 <br />Hillsborough,but not in Chapel Hill.Sheriff Blackwood said it is important tothink aheadsince <br />38 <br />construction costs are only going to go up. <br />39 <br />Commissioner Pelissiersaid the space study did not look at the old jail. She said how <br />40 <br />would the old jailbe usedwhen the new jail is built. <br />41 <br />Sheriff Blackwood said a philosophy will have to be determined when building the new <br />42 <br />jail. He said it is possible to duplicate what currently exists. He said this would be <br />43 <br />counterproductive. He said he would like to see efficient placeswithin the existing facility <br />44 <br />tapped into. He would like the new facility to be all inclusive andfor the existing facility to <br />45 <br />complement it. <br />46 <br />Sheriff Blackwood said numerous things have been discussed for the old jailbut no <br />47 <br />decisions have been made. He said the old jail hadbeenbuilt out as much as possible while <br />48 <br />remaining safe. <br /> <br />
