The Chamber believes a
community is strongest when it bas a thriving economy; healthy enviromnant, and
an equitable society-all goals embodied by the Coalition, Further, the Chamber
believes the Comprehensive Plan should be an aflrmiug document that reflects
the intersection of interests within a community, and communicates those values to
county staff and potential developmenf projects.
As a partner member of the Coalition, the Chamber views the goals and mission
of the Coalition as critical to the future economic success of Orange County. The
Chamber supports the Coalition's strategy of specifying where development
should occur, giving clarity and certainty to the development process. Further, by
accelerating the development of model commercial projects, the county's
commercial fax base will grow in a sustainable and equitable fashion, a goal of the
Chamber.
In addition to sound economic development, the Chamber supports the
transportation, housing and land use goals of the Coalition. The Chamber
believes that it is in our members'-and community's.-interest fo have a robust
and diverse transportation system that uses fewer natural resources. It is also clear
that new and relocating businesses are drawn to communities that offer a range of
housing options, parks and recreation opportunities. The Chamber believes the
strategies put forth by the Coalition go a long way in promoting a community with
such assets.
In closing, we thank you for reviewing the Chamber's reasons for~support of the
Coalition and its goals and hope Orange County staff and ofncials will take these
goals into account when crafting the Comprehensive Plan.
Sincerely,
Aaron M. Nelson
President and CEO
Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce
Foundation for a Sustainable Community
13 of 16
