BACKGROUND: The 35th annual National Volunteer Week is April 27 -May 3, 2008. The purpose of this week is to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers at the local, state and national levels. The theme for National Volunteer Week 2008 is "Volunteer to Change the World." The National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing it as an annual celebration of volunteering. Every President since has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week. Additionally, elected officials throughout the nation will be making public statements and sign resolutions/proclamations in support of volunteers and in recognition of National Volunteer Week. This week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek ways to engage in their communities. It is about showing the nation that challenges cab be met not as isolated individuals but as members of a true community with all working together. National Volunteer Week encourages individuals and communities to be at the center of social change, discovering their power to make a difference in their communities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported that about 60.8 million people volunteered through or for an organization, at least once, between September 2006 and September 2007. During this National Volunteer Week, County Commissioners will show their appreciation for all the time and effort to volunteers who serve on Orange County advisory boards and commissions by presenting each volunteer with a gift.
