15 <br />NAME OF BOARD /COMMISSION: Advisory Board on Aging <br />Report Period: January — December 2014 <br />ORANGE COUNTY ADVISORY BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS <br />ANNUAL REPORT/ WORK PLAN FOR THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />The Board of Commissioners welcomes input from various advisory boards and commissions in <br />preparation for its annual planning retreat. Please complete the following information, limited to the <br />front and back of this form. Other background materials may be provided as a supplement to, but not <br />as a substitute for, this form. <br />Board /Commission Name: Advisory Board on Aging <br />Person to address the BOCC at work session- if applicable- and contact information: <br />Heather Altman, Advisory Board Chair <br />haltman(cD-carolwoods.org <br />919- 918 -2609 <br />Primary County Staff Contact: Janice Tyler, Department on Aging Director <br />How many times per month does this board /commission meet, including any special meetings and <br />sub - committee meetings? <br />The Advisory Board on Aging meets monthly. Members also participate in the Master Aging Plan <br />Steering Committee (quarterly), the Project EngAGE Planning Committee (quarterly) and the Long <br />Term Care Collaborative. <br />Brief Statement of Board /Commission's Assigned Charge and Responsibilities. <br />The Advisory Board suggests policy and makes recommendations to the Board of Commissioners <br />and the Department on Aging while acting as the liaison between the older citizens of the County and <br />the County government. It is charged with promoting needed services, programs and funding that <br />impacts the older citizens. <br />What are your Board /Commission's most important accomplishments? <br />Oversight of the implementation of the 2012 -17 Master Aging Plan — which included the following <br />accomplishments during 2014: <br />• Graduated 27 senior leaders from Project EngAGE, a 13 comprehensive class on local aging <br />issues. The graduates form local senior resource teams to disseminate information and work <br />on addressing identified service gaps throughout the county. <br />• Expanded outreach efforts to Chinese, Hispanic & LGBT older adults through the senior <br />centers. <br />• Awarded 2nd grant from the Department of Transportation to support Mobility Manager's efforts <br />to increase use of public transportation options by older adults, especially in rural parts of the <br />county, and to initiate a volunteer driver program through the Department. <br />• Facilitated development of new health promotion /exercise programs in community locations <br />serving older adults, such as New Hope Presbyterian Church and the Schley Grange Hall <br />• Continued to collaborate with EMS to offer the "Stay Up and Active" Falls Prevention project. <br />• Continued the "Aging in Community" housing presentation series by offering 3 new sessions <br />during the spring and hosted a Senior Housing EXPO in October that drew nearly 300 <br />attendees. <br />
