10 <br />1 <br />Chair Jacobs said hemet with SteveBrantleyand others today to discuss how the <br />2 <br />County might work to support the food council. He said these meetings are filled with energetic <br />3 <br />young people who are excited to work on the local food economy. He said Steve Brantley will <br />4 <br />be following up with the presentation of some new ideas. <br />5 <br />Chair Jacobs expressedcondolences to the families of Charlene Pilkey and Don Shea. <br />6 <br />Commissioner Dorosin said several weeks ago this Board passed a resolution regarding <br />7 <br />equal access to education for immigrant children. He said other local boards were asked to <br />8 <br />pass similar resolutions. He said the Chapel Hill Carrboro School Board has decided not to <br />9 <br />pass a resolution, though they reiterated that they do not discriminate. He said the goal of <br />10 <br />passing these resolutions is to add a progressive voice to a discussion that is often dominated <br />11 <br />by anti-progressive advocates. <br />12 <br />Commissioner Dorosin noted that the constitutionality of the private school vouchers will <br />th <br />13 <br />be discussed in the state supreme court on February 16. He said this will ultimately have an <br />14 <br />effect on public school funding across the state. <br />15 <br />Commissioner Rich asked when there will be discussion regarding the request to move <br />16 <br />board comments up to the beginning of regular meetings. <br />th <br />17 <br />Chair McKee said this will be discussed at the February 10BOCC Work Session. <br />18 <br />Commissioner Rich congratulated theChapel Hill High fencing team,who won their <br />19 <br />division tournament and will be moving on to state competition. She recognized Bobby <br />20 <br />Woodward, the electrician for the district, and LeonardSterns, the East Chapel Hill High <br />21 <br />custodian, who stayed to watch the fencing tournament and helped clean up. <br />22 <br />Chair McKeesaid he had the honor of speaking at an event put on by Free Spirit <br />23 <br />Freedomto commemorate early Orange County schools for colored children. He said his <br />24 <br />comments centered on not forgetting history, and he spoke on the desegregation of the school <br />25 <br />system.
