Governor's recent proposal for a teacher raise is to be funded by further cuts to education in other areas (like the UNC system and teacher assistant support), and by shifting certain other costs from state responsibility to local schools. Those same budget cuts resulted in a reduced tax bill for me and other Orange county taxpayers. I would gladly return the difference if doing so would help fully fund our local public schools. Please, use whatever creative means you have at your disposal to fully fund the requested per-pupil allocation for the Chapel Hill Carrboro School System. Finally, thank you for your public service. I appreciate your selfless (and at times thankless) work to make our county a better place to work and to live. I promised my children, I would send a note. Today as most state professionals are celebrating Memorial Day with their family and friends, our district teachers are working toward building a stronger and brighter future. They are in class teaching our children and future voters. The hardest part of sending my children to school today was knowing that teachers are being forced to make very tough decisions. They are being forced to leave our state or their profession to find better opportunities. With a 15.7% drop in average pay for our teachers and forced increase of attention placed on testing, accountability and restrictions is a direct attack on the teaching profession. We appreciate and recognize the dedication of our public school teachers everyday, especially today. We hope you will do the same by committing to maintaining school funding and district required levels and by working to bring the North Carolina pay levels up to the national average.
