12 <br />ALTERNATIVE SENTENCING <br />Orange and Chatham Alternative Sentencing provide written individualized reports to <br />the judge at sentencing hearings for offenders and recommends structured sentencing <br />plans. <br />2007-2008 Allocation: $83,000 2008-2009 Request: $83,000 <br />Recommendation: Funding of $83,000 for structured, alternative sentencing services to <br />Orange County residents. <br />AMERICAN RED CROSS <br />The American Red Cross provides relief to disaster victims and helps people prepare <br />for and respond to emergencies. <br />2007-2008 Allocation: $5,000 2008-2009 Request: $7,000 <br />Recommendation: Funding of $7,000 this year to provide disaster relief assistance to <br />Orange County residents. <br />ANIMA~KIND <br />AnimalKind's mission is to make spay/neuter affordable and accessible for the lowest- <br />income citizens in the Triangle-area of North Carolina, through targeted spay/neuter <br />programs and advocacy in public funding. <br />2007-2008 Allocation: N/A 2008-2009 Request: $18,000 <br />Recommendation: The Commission did not recommend funding for AnimalKind for FY <br />2008-09. <br />ARTSCENTER <br />The ArtsCenter links art, artists, and audiences in Orange County through programs, <br />events and classes designed in response to community needs and interests. <br />2007-2008 Allocation: $10,000 2008-2009 Request: $15,000 <br />Recommendation: Funding of $10,000 this year to provide disaster relief. <br />BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF DURHAM AND ORANGE COUNTIES <br />The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to help children reach their potential through <br />professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships to children who live in <br />single parent homes or other children in need of a secondary role model. <br />2007-2008 Allocation: $5,000 2008-2009 Request: $10,000 <br />Recommendation: HSAC recommends funding of $10,000 to support the mentoring <br />program for children from Orange County. <br />ORANGE COUNTY-CARRBORO YMCA -BOOMERANG PROGRAM <br />Boomerang is a community-based alternative to suspension program for middle and <br />high school students in Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools. <br />2007-2008 Allocation: N/A 2008-2009 Request: $5,000 <br />Recommendation: HSAC recommends funding of $5,000 for services to Orange <br />County students. <br />2008-09 HSAC Outside Agency Recommendations 2 <br />
