4
1
2
3 Human Resources-Brenda Bartholomew
4 • Would like for HR to become a strategic player in the game—that we are at the table when
5 decisions are being made that are related to personnel and human resources' decisions.
6 • Measure HR impact on your Department, consider the rules and the exception to the rules
7 when problems arise.
8 • Learn all we can about Orange County strategies and core values to inform recruitment,
9 retention and succession planning. Look to our employees as best candidates for promotions.
10 • Prioritize looking at salary plans, compensation, and performance reviews.
11 • We want to build trust among employees
12 • When asked how the county is doing on diversity in the workplace the response was that
13 Departments are different but we need to enhance our competitive process and eliminate
14 barriers to diversity.
15
16 North Carolina State Cooperative Extension-Carl Maytac
17 • They are working on updating their long range plan and developing an agenda for an
18 Agriculture Summit.
19 • They still have vacancies that need to be filled —the Director wants to fill the current Extension
20 Agent position then wants an additional position.
21 • When asked if they have any focus on getting quality/nutritious food to those in need, the
22 response was they are working on a food distribution network. Community gardens are being
23 developed short term and they are educating people on how to do food access and nutrition
24 work.
25
26 Library-Lucinda Munger
27 We review our strategic plan, goals, and objectives monthly.
28 Challenges:
29 o Biggest challenge is outreach into the community and within county government to
30 understand how to do research on topics. There's a need to break the stereotype and
31 change the image of the library, clarifying for people what a library is and is not. The library
32 is an information center with skilled researchers who can find information that is needed.
33 o Would like more of an open dialogue with County colleagues including the Commissioners
34 so they can make better use of the library resources.
35
36 Department of Environmental, Agricultural, Parks and Recreation (DEAPR)-Dave Stancil
37 Challenges:
38 o Coordinating with the schools to use their facilities like their gymnasium or school fields for
39 the public when those facilities aren't in use by the school.
40 o Community Centers -What are they? What level of service can we anticipate from them?
41 o In the area of Agriculture and local foods —Can we create local markets and get food stuffs
42 to institutions and other local consumers in a way that makes sense.
43 o How do we work with nonprofit providers and sports complex on recreation
44 o Joint parks and capital funding for parks with neighboring communities.
45 o Climate Change and Environmental Issues
46
47 Child Support-Janet Sparks
48 • Challenges
