18 <br /> Recommendations/Strategies <br /> • Evaluate need for more vocational and employability skills classes in middle and high <br /> school. <br /> • Develop partnerships with employers to support high school completion by not hiring fifteen <br /> to nineteen year olds unless they stay in school and by giving them flexible work hours. <br /> • Add counselors at Orange High School to increase ratio to two counselors per grade. <br /> • Continue successful intervention projects, such as the Medical Concerns Assessment Team, <br /> Action Team, and guidance groups. <br /> • Continue alternative programs for at-risk students, substance abuse assessment, and Work for <br /> Success groups. <br /> • Strenzthen parental involvement in schools by <br /> • Training teachers to conduct conferences with parents of at-risk students <br /> • Adding school social workers for home/school coordination <br /> • Educating parents and starring support groups <br /> • Creating innovative programs to meet with parents at their job sites (Such a program is <br /> currently conducted at NC Memorial Hospital) <br /> • Involving Dropout Prevenrion Task Force. <br /> • Provide more flexible schedules for students. <br /> • Alter expectations about "normal" time in which a student should finish high school. <br /> • Consider an extended day program in which high school students may attend school after <br /> ,.vork. Such a program should provide them with school bus transportation and support <br /> services as well. <br /> • Promote cooperative efforts to secure funding and to strengthen inter-agency communication. <br /> • Desisinate funds for support services in school. <br /> Add support staff targeted toward at-risk students in clementary and middle schools. <br />
