1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No.
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: May 2, 1994
SUBJECT: PROPOSED CHANGE TO THE BY-LAWS FOR THE COMMISSION FOR
WOMEN
------------------------------ ------------------------------
DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC HEARING: Yes x No
Commission for Women
------------------------------ ------------------------------
ATTACHMENT(S) : INFORMATION CONTACT:
. Proposed By-laws Change Lucy Lewis, ext 2251
TELEPHONE NUMBER:
Hillsborough - 732-8181
Chapel Hill - 968-4501
Durham - 688-7331
Mebane - 227-2031
----------------------------------------------------------------
PURPOSE: To consider a proposed change in the Commission for
Women by-laws.
BACKGROUND: The proposed change in the Commission for Women by-
laws concerns Article III , Membership, Section 3, Distribution.
The current by-laws state, "Distribution of Commission membership
should be as follows: Five members should reside in Chapel Hill
Township; one in Bingham Township; one in either Chapel Hill or
Bingham Township; three in Hillsborough Township; one each in
Eno, Little River, Cheeks, and Cedar Grove Townships: and one in
any of the last five" . The Commission believes that the current
by-laws are too restrictive regarding township representation.
This has prevented some well-qualified applicants from being
considered for membership while allowing some Board positions to
remain vacant for a significant length of time. The proposed
change will ensure significant representation from both ends of
the county, as well as both urban and rural townships, while
providing some necessary flexibility regarding township
representation.
RECOMMENDATION(S) : The Manager recommends that the Board approve
the proposed change in the Commission for Women by-laws.
