1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No. T-Y-E
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: March 15, 1994
SUBJECT: Pine Knolls Community Development
Adolescent After School Program
--------------------------------- ----------------------------------
DEPARTMENT: Board of Commissioners PUBLIC HEARING YES: NO: X
--------------------------------- ----------------------------------
ATTACHMENT(S) : No INFORMATION CONTACT:
Moses Carey, Jr.
TELEPHONE NUMBER -
Hillsborough - 732-8181
Chapel Hill - 968-5401
Durham - 688-7331
Mebane - 227-2031
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
PURPOSE: The Pine Knolls Community Development Board requests $5, 000
from the Board of County Commissioners to fund maintenance (janitorial
services) for the operation of the after school program for the next two
years.
BACKGROUND: The Pine Knolls Community Center and the YMCA of Chapel Hill
have jointly obtained a grant from the Greater Triangle Communities
Foundation to operate an after school program for adolescents at the Pine
Knolls Community Center during the school year. The funding from the
Greater Triangle Communities Foundation has financed the operating costs
of the program for the first year. The Pine Knolls Community Center has
contributed the physical facility and the parents of students in the
program have volunteered to clean the building in order for the program to
operate. The YMCA and the Pine Knolls Community Center have decided to
jointly provide funding, or seek grants, to continue the operation of the
program during the summer and for the next school year beginning in 1994.
The Pine Knolls Community Center Board of Directors has realized that the
volunteer efforts of parents to maintain the building are insufficient for
the continued operation of the program. Therefore, the Pine Knolls
Community Center Board is requesting $5, 000 from the Orange County Board
of Commissioners to fund the janitorial services to maintain the building
over the next two years so that parents can address their attention to
support the educational program for their children. The Chair of the Pine
Knolls Community Center Dr. Ted Parrish, or his designee, will be
available to answer questions about the after school program at the
Community Center.
RECOMMENDATION(S) : As the Board Decides.
