44
1-27-94- -
Peter M. Pickens
3004 Cool Spring Drive
Chapel Hill , NC 27514
January 26 . 1994
Rural Character Study Committee
306F Revere Road
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dear Rural Character Study Committee Members :
I was at the meeting of the Rural Character Study
Committee at New Hope School last night and left when we were
about to divide into small groups . I left because the issues
that you wanted imput from us were not the issues that I
came to address . It seemed to me that all you were concerned
with was how to carve up subdivisions and somehow still
maintain some semblance of rural character .
While lot and open Space size are important , what really
is critical for preserving Orange County' s rural character is
first to decide the amount of land that is going to be set
aside for housing developments and still maintain the rural
character of the county and then decide just what kind of
developments are acceptable , including their facilities and
restrictive covenants - not just lot size and open space .
And we all need to know who is making these decisions , when,
how, and why - in fact, we the residents of Orange County
included in the Rural Character Committee ' s jurisdiction
should not just supply imput but help make the actual
decisions too because we are the ones who are going to be
most affected by them.
Sincerely,
Rti—L rt
