The
proposed new name would be Coordinated Area Transportation. This change
is recommended in order to reflect the system's provision of general
public transportation as well as service to the County's human service
agencies.
Orange County initiated a coordinated transportation system in 1982. At
that time the system was composed of 7 human service agencies who needed
to provide transportation for their clients. Over time the system has
grown to include 12 different participating agencies. In 1993 the Federal
Transit Administration (formerly the Urban Mass Transit Administration)
widened its focus from provision of service strictly to agency clients to
providing service to the general public. In addition to offering
available seats on existing routes to the public, coordinated systems are
being asked to establish routes that would provide service to the rural
general public. Future funding will be influenced by a system's success
in meeting the rural public transportation need. In October, 1993 Orange
County established the GAT Express Shuttle to serve the general public
needing transportation between northern Orange County and the Chapel Hill-
Carrboro area.
RECOMMENDATION(S) :
Manager recommends approval of the name change from Coordinated Agency
Transportation to Coordinated Area Transportation.
FN:ABS94#7.DOC
