The Planning Department Staff works closely
with the Commission to provide technical support and administer
grant funds.
The Planning and Inspections Department is also beginning
work toward preparation of a Preservation Plan for the County
which will include goals and objectives as well as policy
statements and implementation strategies for recognizing and
protecting the County's historic and archaeological resources.
Recommendations may include designating historic districts,
pursuing nominations to the National Register of Historic Places,
and methods of educating the public about preservation efforts.
Since 1987 Orange County has been developing methods to
protect the natural resources, visual resources, and farmland in
the county through the Rural Character Study. The Rural Character
Study Committee has proposed strategies for incorporation into
the Zoning Ordinance to require the protection of open space. The
goals of the Rural Character Study will also accomplish historic
preservation objectives.
The manuscript for the publication will be completed by the
consultants in March 1994.
