6
DRAFT
PROPOSAL FOR PUBLICATION OF THE ORANGE COUNTY INVENTORY OF
HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES
As part of its comprehensive planning program, Orange County
has pursued completion of detailed inventories of its cultural,
historic, recreational, biological, and geological resources.
Since 1991 the County has received three matching grants from the
North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, State Historic
Preservation Office to survey architecture over fifty years old
in the unincorporated portions of the County. A survey of
archaeological sites is currently undirway.
The primary reason for gathering information on cultural
resources is that Orange County has experienced increased
pressure from development and an expanding population, especially
since the completion of Interstate 40 through the county in 1989.
Our historic sites, structures, and landscapes which are the
framework of our cultural heritage are irreplaceable once they
are destroyed. These elements, combined with Orange County's
natural scenic quality, also make it an attractive place for
newcomers and businesses to locate. Protection of the resources
mentioned depends on identification and education/awareness on
the part of land owners and the general public.
The County now seeks to publish the results of the inventory
of historic sites and structures and include historic properties
surveyed in the Towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, and
Mebane. The publication will feature a description of the history
of Orange County, chapters on architecture and archaeology with
individual entries for properties and sites listed during the
survey. Text will be supplemented with black and white
photographs as well as stories of the people associated with the
historic homes, schools, churches, mills, etc. , as provided by
current owners, family members, and neighbors consulted over the
last three years.
In 1993 Orange County obtained a matching grant from the
State Historic Preservation office to hire consultants to produce
a manuscript for the inventory publication. A grant from the
Glaxo Incorporated Special Projects Fund would be used in
• combination with funds to be solicited from the local
municipalities, private organizations and individuals to obtain
editorial services, produce the graphics and layout, and print
800-1000 copies of the book. The estimated total cost of
production is $48,000. The amount of the grant request is $6000,
approximately the cost for editing the publication.
The inventory, manuscript, and the publication are being
coordinated by the Orange County Historic Preservation commission
