i
3
GREATER TRIANGLE CUNLNfU ITY FOUNDATION
Information on Grants: Spring 1994 Cvcle
The Greater Triangle Community Foundation is now seeking applications for its Spring 1994
Regional Community Grants and Glaxo Inc. Special Projects Grants programs.
The Foundation welcomes proposals in all charitable fields including the arts, the environment,
health, hurnan services, and other charitable fields for the benefit of the metropolitan Triangl°
area (Wake, Durham, and Orange Counties) of North Carolina.
In 1994, the Foundation is particularly interested in and encourages proposals that address the
following 1S,.112s:
• The needs and opportunities of children in the Triangle region
• Improved public transportation
• Environmental education at every age level
• Affordable, accessible child care
• Drug abuse education and treatment programs
• Transitional housing and supportive services for the homeless
• Regional cooperation between organizations in all three Triangle counties
• Direct assistance to persons in need
Note: Although the Foundation is particularly interested in the above needs, all proposals
that address a significant need or opportunity in the Triangle are encouraged and eligible
for funding. Strong proposals that do not address one of these needs will still be considered.
Two types of grants will be awarded in the Spring grants cycle. Grants from the Regional
Community Grants program will be awarded for new initiatives or one-time special projects
that promote cooperation, coordination of services or activities, resource sharing, and mutual
responsibility across the three Triangle counties. The Foundation is particularly interested in
projects that will promote ongoing cooperation among the Triangle's three communities. The
Community Foundation will award grants between $5,400 and 515,000, some of which may
be issued as challenge grants. The proposed project must involve individuals, agencies, or
institutions from Wake, Durham, and Orange Counties. Projects that benefit the three
Triangle counties and outlying counties in the metropolitan Triangle area will also be
considered. A lead organization must be designated to assume management and fiscal
administration of the grant.
Regional Community Grants, part of the Community Foundation's "Leadership Toward A
Regional Community" program, are designed to promote new and ongoing cooperation across ,
county lines. Although viewed by the outside world as a single region, the several
communities of the Triangle have traditionally acted, and continue to act, in isolation. While
in some areas this action is appropriate, such as in the preservation of unique heritage and
identities, in other areas collaboration would enhance the ability of organizations to provide
services to the community. Many of our communities' most pressing needs do not stop at
county lines; thus, organizations seeking to address those needs most effectively must
cooperate regionally without regard for county affiliation.
