ORANGE C O U N T Y
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date January 18, 1994
Action Agenda
Item #
SUBJECT: GREATER TRIANGLE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION APPLICATION FOR
GLAXO INC. SPECIAL PROJECTS GRANT
DEPARTMENT: Planning & Inspections PUBLIC HEARING: Yes X No
ATTACHMENT(S) : INFORMATION CONTACT: Emily Cameron
Extension 2580
Draft Application
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough - 732-8181
Durham - 688-7331
Mebane - 227-2031
Chapel Hill - 967-92511968-4501
PURPOSE: To consider an application for the Glaxo Incorporated
Special Projects Grant for funding to be used in
publication of the Inventory of Historic Architecture
and Archaeological Sites.
BACKGROUND: On October 4, the Board of Commissioners approved a
grant application for submittal to the State Grants
Program for the amount of $48,000. In December the
Planning Department was notified that Orange County
was not awarded grant funds this year. Consequently,
other funding sources must be sought to produce the
inventory publication.
Attached is a draft copy of the application for the
Greater Triangle Foundation Glaxo Inc. Special
Projects Grant. The amount requested is $6000. The
amount awarded "rarely exceeds $5000; " however, the
grants are offered twice a year.
The Historic Preservation Commission plans to request
similar or greater amounts from the County
Commissioners, the Towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro,
Hillsborough, and private organizations (such as
historical societies) and individuals. The Planning
Staff has recommended that the initial printing of the
book produce 800-1000 copies rather than 1500 as
originally discussed. The estimated total cost of
printing is $38-40,000, including editorial services.
