r <br /> a <br /> 1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: January 18, 1994 <br /> Agenda Abstract <br /> Item * VffZ <br /> SUBJECT: 1994 HISTORIC SURVEY& PLANNING GRANT APPLICATION <br /> DEPARTMENT: Planning PUBLIC HEARING.- Yes X No <br /> ATTACHMENTS: INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Application Planning Director X2592 <br /> PHONE NUMBERS: <br /> Hillsborough 732-8181 <br /> Mebane 227-2031 <br /> Durham 688-7331 <br /> Chapel Hill 967-9251 <br /> PURPOSE: To consider an application for 1994 Historic Survey and Planning Grant Funds. <br /> BACKGROUND: The N.C.Historic Preservation Office(HPO)has announced the application period <br /> for 1994 Survey and Planning Grant Funds.Eligible projects include architectural <br /> and archaeological surveys, preparation of nominations to the National Register <br /> of Historic Places, and preservation plans. <br /> This year, an estimated $130,000 is available for survey and planning grants to <br /> communities or nonprofit organizations.Of the total amount,$70,000 is reserved <br /> for grants in communities that participate in the Certified Local Government <br /> (CLG)program,including Orange County.The remaining communities may apply <br /> for grants from the remaining$60,000. Grant funds are awarded on a matching <br /> basis with awards generally in the$5,000415,000 range. <br /> Grant applications must be completed and submitted to the HPO by January 31, <br /> 1994. Grant awards will be announced in March, 1994, and projects must be <br /> completed by July 31, 1995. <br /> Previous phases of the County's historic preservation initiative are as follows: <br /> Phase I - Historic architectural inventory of the un-incorporated portions <br /> of Chapel Hill Township (completed July, 1992) <br /> Phase II- Historic architectural inventory of the remaining un-incorporated <br /> portions of the county (completed October, 1993) <br /> Phase III- Archaeological inventory of the county and preparation of the <br /> history inventory publication manuscript (currently underway) <br /> Phase IV is to consist of pre an Historic Preservation Element as part of <br /> the Comprehensive Plan and is estimated to cost $45,890, including$10,000 in <br /> grant in County matching funds ($10,000 appropriation plus one- <br /> time$9,040 diversion of intern funds in FY 1994.95 budget),and$16,850 in-kind <br />
