Consequently, the -1-arger. <br /> Advisory Group reccmiends that these noaes W used for small, meal <br /> scores and retail centers, light industrial companies, conference and <br /> training centers, nusinesses tLat, serve agriculture, researcn <br /> facilities, businesses tnat have low truck and limited night traffic, <br /> and commuter traffic concentrated at b:UU AM and 5:UU Pm. <br /> Desirable business attributes -- Without exception, businesses that <br /> snould be attracted to Orange County should rie: <br /> x generally non-polluting, <br /> x use little treated water, <br /> do not produce hazardous or large volumes of waste for disposal. <br /> provide fair wages for employment of all Orange County citizens, <br /> regardless of race, education, and skill level. <br /> This employment can be accomplished through large or small employers, <br /> but large employers should be concentrated in the Interstate corridors, <br /> the Hillsborough and Mebane areas, and large activity nodes designated <br /> in the Land Use Plan. <br /> Water and sewer should be extended to businesses located near the <br /> municipalities. Efforts snould be made to make buildings <br /> architecturally attractive and complement the landscape. <br /> Commuter and daytime traffic generators should not locate in congested <br /> municipalities; multiple shift businesses should be located next to <br /> major tnoroughfares. <br /> Types of businesses to recruit: Generally, the businesses that fit <br /> Orange County's business niche are companies that serve/supply business <br /> in the Research Triangle or the Piedmont Triad, regional distributors, <br /> specialty mail order facilities, educational and/or consulting terms, <br /> or medical/hospital related companies. <br /> Research facilities should be allowed to locate anywhere in the County <br /> that is appropriate for business. Large, regional operations should <br /> locate in the interstate corridors and in the municipalities. <br /> Businesses with traffic (distribution, mail order, shopping malls, and <br /> major industries) should locate near the interstate highways. Service <br /> businesses should locate near their customers. Light manufacturing <br /> facilities should be recruited for all areas except the 1-40 corridor, <br /> the rural countryside, and Chapel Hill. <br /> Regional training and conference facilities should be encouraged to <br /> locate in the soutnern part of the County where there is access to the <br /> Research Triangle Park area and the University of North Carolina at <br /> Chapel Hill.
