This employment can be accomplished through large or small employers, but large employers should be concentrated in the Interstate corridors, the Hillsborough and Mebane areas, and large activity nodes designated in the Land Use Plan. Water and sewer should be extended to businesses located near the municipalities. Efforts snould be made to make buildings architecturally attractive and complement the landscape. Commuter and daytime traffic generators should not locate in congested municipalities; multiple shift businesses should be located next to major tnoroughfares. Types of businesses to recruit: Generally, the businesses that fit Orange County's business niche are companies that serve/supply business in the Research Triangle or the Piedmont Triad, regional distributors, specialty mail order facilities, educational and/or consulting terms, or medical/hospital related companies. Research facilities should be allowed to locate anywhere in the County that is appropriate for business. Large, regional operations should locate in the interstate corridors and in the municipalities. Businesses with traffic (distribution, mail order, shopping malls, and major industries) should locate near the interstate highways. Service businesses should locate near their customers. Light manufacturing facilities should be recruited for all areas except the 1-40 corridor, the rural countryside, and Chapel Hill. Regional training and conference facilities should be encouraged to locate in the soutnern part of the County where there is access to the Research Triangle Park area and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
