i
The National Register of Historic Places is a roster maintained
by the National Park Service of buildings, sites, and objects
deemed worthy of recognition and preservation. As a Certified
Local Government, Orange County is required to conduct a public
hearing when a site within its jurisdiction is nominated to the k
National Register.
The property is located in Eno Township on the north side of St.
Mary's Road (SR 1002) 0.4 mile west of New Sharon Church Road (SR
1538) . The tract contains 63.15 acres and is currently zoned
Agricultural Residential.
Located on the property are a residence, a barn, and two (2) non-
contributing structures. The house began as a single-pen log
cabin built circa 1810. Approximately ten years later, a two-
story, Federal style farmhouse was built as a separate structure
south of the log cabin. A Greek Revival wing was added to the
farmhouse circa 1855. In 1940, the farmhouse was connected to
the cabin by an ell extending north. The last addition to Maple
Hill was a dining room/kitchen wing built in 1946 east of the log
cabin.
A large log and frame barn is located in a pasture west of Maple
Hill. The description contained in the nomination form estimates
that the barn was built from 1855 to 1910. It contributes to the
historic quality of the site.
National Register nominations are evaluated based on the
following criteria;
a. Property is associated with events that have made a
significant contribution to the broad patterns of our
history.
b. Property is associated with the lives of persons significant
in our past.
c. Property embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type,
period, or method of construction or represents the work of
a master, or possesses high artistic values, or represents a
significant and distinguishable entity whose components lack
individual distinction.
d. Property has yielded, or is likely to yield, information
important in prehistory or history.
Maple Hill and the accompanying farm qualify for listing on the
National Register under Criteria A and C. The vernacular Federal
style of the farmhouse is one of the best examples from the early
nineteenth century that remain standing in Orange County. The
farm is significant in that it illustrates the type of
diversified subsistence farming that supported the agricultural
economy of Orange County in the nineteenth and early-twentieth
centuries.
During the review period, the Planning Staff solicited comments
from interested agencies or groups. Because the property is
located adjacent to one of the sites being considered for a
future landfill to serve the county and municipalities, the
